Stuart Don Pompian

Stuart Don Pompian passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 96 on January 25, 2025. He outlived his cherished wife, Nancy, and is survived by his two sons, Michael (Angela) and David, as well as five grandchildren: Nicholas, Alexander, Spencer, Tyler, and Sascha. A long-time resident of Hanover, NH, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him there. Stuart was born on January 13, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, to Samuel Pompian and Florence Brownstein. He proudly graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in electrical engineering after serving two years in the Army during the Korean War. After graduation, he moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he met and married his wife, Nancy. His first job was at Raytheon, where he was awarded several patents for his pioneering work on some of the first lasers. After starting a family, Stuart and Nancy moved to Newton, Massachusetts. He later transitioned to a successful career as a venture capitalist in Boston, known for his unwavering tenacity in supporting the companies he believed in. Upon “retiring” to New Hampshire full-time, he co-founded a company in partnership with Dartmouth College called Dartware. Following that success, he dedicated many years to volunteering with SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives, helping countless budding entrepreneurs in the Upper Valley achieve their dreams. Stuart had a wealth of hobbies and interests. One of his great passions was beekeeping; he affectionately referred to the bees as his “employees.” He was also a pilot, enjoyed fly fishing, and loved rowing on the Connecticut River, as well as collecting clocks. He traveled extensively, including many memorable trips to Montreal, and cherished lazy afternoon drives through the beautiful back roads of New Hampshire and Vermont with Nancy. A celebration of his life will take place this summer in Hanover, NH. Those who knew Stuart and wish to honor his memory at the gathering are invited to join by emailing mpompian@gmail.com. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Nancy W. Pompian Memorial Fund at Dartmouth College.
